So I've been slacking. First the excuse - I've started my PhD work, and its a bit more than I expected, but I think I'm settling into a good pace. After five weeks, I've realized that, for my own sanity, I have to make time for gardening and knitting somewhere. I've also decided that I'm going to make it my habit to post on Sunday afternoons after I get in from garden work.
So, what is going on in the garden? I have a new raised bed! My husband finally got tired of the vegetables at the front of the house and built me a raised bed (about 12 inches tall) out of block in the backyard. He felt so sorry for the light starved little seedlings that he fought the spirit of procrastination that has been haunting us and had two of our trees removed from the backyard. They were blotting out the sun so badly that the grass wouldn't even grow back there. Now, my little seedlings are soaking up the morning rays.
The fall planting roll call (4 x 4 raised bed):
(links are informational only - I got most of my seed from a local grower)
Swiss Chard
Broccoli
Cabbage (Copenhagen Market Early)
Lettuce (Black-seeded Simpson and Great Lakes #118)
Collard Greens (Georgia Southern)
Carrots ( Red Cored Chantenay)
Radishes (Icicle)
Onions (Red burgundy)
And in the front yard, I've planted a small (2 x 2 ) patch of multiplier onions. Hopefully they will be happy and make this a permanent home. Next to that, I planted a 1 x 1 plot of yellow storage and white bulb onions from Gramblings (one of our local farm supplies). I'm really excited about the onions - I use onions almost every day, so it will be good to have some for storage as well as a constant fresh supply.
